Anil Kant – Christian Song Writer

Anil Kant is an internationally renowned singer, musician, song writer and Christian worship leader in India, who has recorded 12 music albums in past 6 years. He is also a founder of ‘Anil Kant International ministry’ (AKIM) which is growing in stature and is impacting millions across the world for Jesus Christ.

In October 2005 Anil Kant has partnered with CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network) to host a daily Christian program on two of the leading Indian secular channels to reach to the millions of Hindi speaking viewers. The program titled “Ek Nayee Zindagi” means ‘A new life’ in Hindi. It is the first Hindi daily Christian program and is receiving a good response. Along with this the team of AKIM has started a unique program “Zindagi Forever” (Life or live forever) that captures the intimate presence of God through music, bringing fresh sounds and songs to the Indian people with the good news of Eternal Life through Jesus Christ. This is the very first Hindi program on the God channel.

Anil Kant comes from a Hindu, Punjabi family. His parents being very religious and devout, had taught the Hindu Scriptures to Anil since a very young age. In spite of growing up in a very Spiritual family Anil felt that he was missing something. Music was an integral part of his life so he decided to take it as his career. His wonderful wife was also very inclined to music. Anil was writing songs for his Christian friends and composing music for them when he came across the famous Bible verse: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me”.  (Bible – John 14:16) This is an exclusive and extraordinary claim made by Jesus during his life on Earth (Read more about Claims of Jesus). It had huge impact on Anil. That very night he felt as if Jesus was talking to him that He is the only way, and the truth. The Word became so real to him. And he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ.

Gradually Anil’s wife Reena also saw a change in her husband. She resisted this new found god in Anil’s life but Anil asked him if she knew what will happen to her if she died today? He also asked her to search the answers in any Scriptures. When Reena read about the cross of Christ and the forgiveness of her sins, she also accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and savior.

Today Anil, his wife and his entire family serves the Lord Jesus Christ and share the Good News of Jesus Christ to many through various media. You can read the account of his entire testimony on http://www.anilkant.org/testimonial.html

Rabi Maharaj – A Man’s Quest for Truth

Rabi Maharaj is an Indian evangelist and founder of East-West Ministries. Rabi comes for a line of Hindu priest who are called “Sanyasi”. The biography of Rabi Maharaj is found in his book, “Death of a Guru: A Remarkable True Story of One Man’s Search for Truth”. This article presents some of the highlights of his life, taken from this book.

Rabi’s Early Years

Indians have known for thousands of years that there is real power in Yoga. But Rabi’s father lived it. He passed his days in meditation and the reading of the sacred scripture –nothing else. Rabi grew up in Trinidad. There is a huge Indian population there. His father was a Brahmin priest who sat under the tree in a lotus position – toes of both feet turned up on the top of the knees- on the board. His father had taken some vows before their marriage so he never talked or even paid a slightest heed to his son. Rabi never understood this. He just wished that at least once his dad would call him and talk to him. But that never happened.

People came from far and near and worshiped him. They would leave fruits and flowers at his feet. They marveled at him and said in solemn reverent tones that surely he had achieved his “Moksha” (Salvation), escaping the wheel of reincarnation. There would be no more rebirths into this world of death for him, only the eternal bliss of Nirvana. They would tell Rabi that “Your Father is very special – the greatest man one could ever have as a father”. One day the unthinkable happed for Ravi. His father passed away. He heard someone in the family say that may be the gods took him away. And he did not understand why this would happen to him.

Rabi felt he had lost everything. Though he had scarcely known him as his father, he had been his inspiration – a god –but now he was dead. At his funeral, his father’s stiff body was placed on a great pile of firewood. The thought of his body being sacrificed to Agni, the god of fire, added a new dimension of mystery to the bewilderment and deep sense of loss that already overwhelmed him.

Nana – Rabi’s Grandfather

After the death of Rabi’s father, he and his mom went and lived with her parents. Her family was a big joint family and had a successful business. Rabi’s grandfather, whom he called “Nana”, was recognized as one of the prominent religious leaders among the large East Indian population in Trinidad, a man who had mysterious super natural powers that none could deny or dared to meddle with. Nana valued occult powers more highly than money. He carried strong iron safe that had an object he wouldn’t sell at any price, a small white stone from India possessed of spirit powers both to heal and curse. Nana passed away during his childhood, but Rabi always felt that spirit of Nana haunted him in the house. He also had heard a story from his uncle that all his Nana’s wealth and the safe were guarded by a snake which could even be a form taken by the Spirits.

In the Footsteps of His Father

Following the instructions from his mother and guided by his father’s perfect example, Rabi practiced meditation every day from the age of five. Sitting in the lotus position with his spine straight, he imitated his father who was more like a god to him. He had perfectly followed in the footsteps of Lord Krishna and other Yogis and his mother taught him that. His father had achieved wide acclaim and earned the worship of many and it was inevitable that upon his death his mantle would fall on Rabi but he has never imagined it would be so soon.

Solemnly and faithfully he worshiped his father’s spirit every day. After few days they whole family went to the site where his father was cremated. All evidence of the cremation was carried away only the memory could not be erased from his mind. Friends and relatives crowded around him in a semicircle. The pundit faced him with the barber’s scissors in one hand. Before he could realize all his hair had fallen to the ground where his father’s ashes had laid.

The chief priest and everyone in village had said that his father had gone back to Brahma and has attained Moksha. But in one of the ceremonies where the ashes of his father were laid, the temple priest saw the prints of a bird’s footstep and declared that his father has become a bird. Rabi was shattered. If his father could not go back to Brahma then there is no hope for him or anyone else in the world. After some days of Rabi’s father death, a feast was made in the house, the first of all food were offered to the dead as per the Hindu custom. So the family placed a all the different samples of food below the banana tree. The priest had warned no one to look back as the spirit of his father would come and eat the food as the spirits can attack anyone if they look back. But Rabi was so much tempted to see his father once, so he stayed back to see what happens to all the food. But to his immense disappointment, the food was still there. As he was taking one step after another he thought the spirit would attack him and he will die but nothing happened. He thought may be the spirits are gracious to him.

Few days after this, his mom told Rabi that she has to go to India, to the river Ganges the holiest of all rivers to sprinkle the ashes of his father. For Rabi an aura of mystery surrounded with that name, ‘Ganges’. He begged his mom to take him also to India but that was not possible. On the day his mom left to go to India by ship, young Rabi cried and cried and would not let go off the knob of the door. For days he cried himself to sleep, it was the worst time for him and missed his mom tremendously. But as a Hindu he was taught to accept his fate and he did exactly the same.

Ma (Rabi’s mother) was a very kind and gentle person. For somewhere she had a Bible but when Nana was alive when he saw Ma with the Bible, he was angry and beat Ma with a belt and threw her down from the stairs. But again she found a Bible from some other pace and the same thing happened.

Rabi had read in the Gita that all the roads leads to the same god so he thought it might be okay but he liked his religion the best. He was only ten years old and he decided to study Hindu scriptures under a famous Brahmacharya (priest) in charge of the temple. In obedience to Vedas, he strictly observed five daily duties, the offerings to gods, to the Seers, to the forefathers, to lower animals and to humanity embodied in the daily religious activities. He began to have visions of psychedelic colors, to hear unearthly music and to visit exotic planets where gods conversed with him. Also in the trance he encountered horrible demonic creatures that are depicted by the images in Hindu, Buddhist, Shinto and other religious temples.

He returned home after the training. He was 11 but already many people were bowing before him, laying gifts of money, cotton cloth and other treasures at his feet and hanging garlands of flowers around his neck at religious ceremonies. One day he had heavy cough and every one at home was worried for his health. But Rabi had a secret habit, he was a chain smoker, he smoked one cigarette after other hailing deeply with each puff. He had money but he can never buy a cigarette so he had to steal them and this troubled his conscience deeply. He was feeling very empty on inside. One day, as usual after doing his daily Puja (prayer), when he placed a fresh Hibiscus bloom on the cow’s head, the cow suddenly without a warning lowered her neck and charged him. He jumped back and ran. He felt his god was chasing him. This shook him; the god whom he worshiped faithfully day by day had attacked him today. This question haunted him for days.

Now it was 6 years Rabi’s mom was away, in all these years he was tired of being cared by his aunty who would be nice at times but harsh some other times. Many times he would have mystical experiences as if some invisible had had slapped him or knocked him down or chocked him. He lived for religious ceremonies, public ones in the temples and private ones at home. There he was admired by all.

His High School Days

It was time for Rabi to attend high school now. One of his Uncles whom he admired had studied in London and returned back. He insisted Rabi to go to a prestigious Queens Royal High school. When he went there, he met many Black, Orientals, English youth and those of other races. He found there were people in the world who were completely outside the caste system. He questioned how did they come into existence? According to his religion, they were clearly without hope. Yet they were not inferior to him, in fact he found hard to compete with them. Every single day he was faced with many real life questions for which he has no answer but only confusion.

One day he was in the garden walking and enjoying nature and a snake came behind him. He was utterly terrified and there was nowhere to escape. At that time he said “Jesus! Help me”. In that moment of frozen terror he recalled his mother voice that if ever he is in danger and nothing else seems to work he can pray to this other God, Jesus. Suddenly to his surprise, snake went other way. He pondered for days why nobody ever taught him about this god. Who was this god and what was he the god of? He tried Jesus one more time when he was sick and it worked. Rabi was going through many hard times with his extended family. He never got the care and nurture of parents, he felt very lonely and angry from within. He even thought of committing suicide. His religion, training and experience in meditation, all had taught him to look within himself and so he tried again and again but it proved futile.

Around that time, one of his cousin’s friends Molli came to see Rabi who was a Hindu devotee just like him before. She talked to Rabi about Jesus who came to die for the sins of mankind. Rabi always knew Karma and had no idea about forgiveness. He had many arguments with Molli but she was always calm, joyful and listened to him with compassion. For the first time in his life, something snapped inside of him and he was broken from inside and he prayed “God, the true God and creator, show me the truth, Please God”.

His cousin brought him a Bible and explained to him the story of Nicodemus coming to Jesus at night. He learned about the “new birth”. The next day he went to a small Christian gathering with his cousin and 2 other Hindu friends who had now accepted Jesus as their Savior. The pastor taught from Psam 23. And that night he could not resist any more and he gave his life to Christ. He found insurmountable peace and joy within him which he had never experienced before.

The Death of a Guru

God was simultaneously working in other members on his family and 13 of them accepted the Lord. Ma was already seeking the truth since a long time and now she could openly accept Christ too. Together the whole family took every idol from the puja room, searched every amulet, charm, fetish, religious picture and artifact throwing them all on the rubbish heap behind the garden and burning them. Rabi felt that it was his cremation ceremony. The old Rabi Maharaj had died in Christ. A new Rabi had been born and raised in Christ.

Rabi later on, received theological training from London Bible College, He has worked with Billy Graham, preached the gospel of Jesus Christ in many churches, University campus and auditoriums all over the world, worked among the drug addicts and led them to Jesus Christ.

Yasmeen Suri – Testimony of Indian Born Singer from USA

Yasmeen Suri is a beautiful, young and talented singer living in the USA. Her music and talent has brought her among the few top Christian singers in the country. She is a trained vocalist from Clark Conservatory in Detroit MI. She has been invited by the Detroit Tigers, the Home Land Security and many other top organizations to sing the national Anthem of America on various occasions.

When Yasmeen was 5 years old, her parents migrated from Punjab, India to USA. The family belonged to the Sikh religion. Being ethnically different from others, Yasmeen often faced cruel jokes and much verbal and mental harassment in her school and among her peers. As she grew up, she found herself into occult and witch craft practices, to overcome loneliness, rejection. She practiced transcendental meditation, talking to spirits, crystals and many other such practices.  The more she engaged herself into occult, the more she felt empty inside. She was seeking the purpose and meaning in her life.

One day, she was taken by surprise, when her friend gifted her Bible on her birthday. Her friend showed Deuteronomy 18:9-14 from the Bible and read it to her.

“When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.  Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.  Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.  You must be blameless before the LORD your God.  The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so.” – Deuteronomy 18: 9-14

These verses became so real and she was convicted to the core of all her sins for the first time. This was the beginning of a new life in Jesus Christ and today she is a living testimony of God’s miraculous works and power. She sings for God now and shares her testimony to the world. This article and video shows the glimpse into the testimony of God’s work in the life of Yasmeen Suri. You will find her detailed story and songs on her website www.Yasmeensuri.com

Pandita Ramabai – Founder of Mukti Mission

Pandita Ramabai (1858-1922)

“A life committed to Christ has Nothing to Fear, Nothing to Loose, Nothing to regret.

Pandita Ramabai was a scholar, poet, visionary, and eminent social reformer. She lived during the time when women were considered subordinate to men and their role in society was limited to procreation. During that time, child marriages were widespread and the child widows were left to abuse and slavery from family and society. They were considered a “curse” and often lived terrible lives filled with agony and pain.

Early Childhood

Pandita Ramabai was born into a Brahmin family. Brahmins, who were generally priests and scholars, were at the top of the caste system that governed the Hindu society. Her childhood name was Rama Dongre. Her father’s name was Anant Shastri, a social reformer who believed in educating girls. When he was forty, he married a 9-year-old girl. Learned in Sanskrit, he read the old Hindu Scriptures – the Puranas in temples for living. He taught Sanskrit to his young wife, for which he was highly despised and abandoned by family and society. Therefore, he went from one village to another with his wife and three children reading the Puranas in temples, fairs, and on auspicious occasions to the wealthy Hindu people who could not read. The Hindus believed they gained merit by listening to the sacred words and would donate money and give gifts to those who read the Scriptures on their behalf. Thus, the family traveled hundreds of miles on foot living a simple life with adequate food or clothing. They never had to beg or work to earn a livelihood. The sacred readings were enough to provide for all their needs.

When Ramabai was 13, her parents became sick and one of her siblings died. She and her older brother, Srinivas, were also struggling. Due to a severe famine occurring in the country at that time, people had very little to eat. There came a time when there was no food left. Occasionally they ate wild leaves and few berries. Sadly, in that destitute condition too weak and sick, her father passed away. Before dying, he took Ramabai and said, “Always go on in the path of God. Always make it your aim to serve God. I have given you into God’s keeping.” After a few months, the same conditions took her mother’s life.

Pandita (The Scholar)

Ramabai was left all alone with her Brother. She began to lose her faith in the religion in which she had suffered so much. They decided to give up their wanderings and settle in Calcutta. Here, they were welcomed by the Hindu priests, as they were high caste Brahmins. They were amazed to hear Ramabai read the Puranas in Sanskrit and were astonished by her wisdom. In those days, very few women were able to read Sanskrit but Ramabai even knew the grammar. Therefore, the priests bestowed her with the highest known title of “Pandita” (Scholar). Soon she was invited to give lectures and to visit places of learning.
The more she studied Hindu Scriptures, the more unhappy and restless she became. She could not find peace. After all the struggles and pain she went through, even her brother became ill and died. Now she was all by herself, alone in this world. She knew a lawyer named Bipin Behari Medavi, who was not a Brahmin but was from a lower caste called “Shudras.” He loved Ramabai and had asked her to marry him. She agreed. This was shocking and unheard-of to her friends and relatives as Ramabai was a high caste Brahmin. Her husband was very caring and he loved her.

People must not only hear about the kingdom of God, but must see it in actual operation, on a small scale perhaps and in imperfect form, but a real demonstration nevertheless. – Pandita Ramabai

A Little Book

One day Ramabai saw a small book in her husband’s library called the “Gospel of St. Luke.” It was in Bengali and she read it from beginning to end. When she inquired about it, he said he got it from the mission school. She wanted greater understanding, so her husband allowed a missionary to come to their home to explain more about the book. As she continued to learn more about the book, she became more peaceful. She wanted to become a Christian, but her husband was not in agreement.

After only 18 months of marriage, Ramabai’s husband contracted Cholera and he too passed away. They had a beautiful daughter named Manorama (joy of the heart). As a Hindu widow, she had no place in her husband’s home so she took her daughter and set forth to her hometown of Pune. Ramabai studied English here and wrote a book, entitled “Morals for Women.”

Across the Ocean

One day, while Ramabai was reading in her home, a little child widow came to her door. She was very sick and had nowhere to go. Ramabai took her inside and cared for her like her own daughter. This inspired her and gave her a new vision and purpose. She wanted to start a home for such widows where they would be loved and care for. Impassioned by this thought, she tried to raise the required money but encountered difficulties. Having little money of her own, it was a great disappointment.

Ramabai had made friends with an English missionary, Miss Hurford, during that time. She was planning to return to England and suggested that Ramabai accompany her. Ramabai’s book had brought in some money, just enough to pay for her and Manorama’s tickets. She was very afraid to cross the ocean and go to a foreign land but she knew that God was calling her, she knew she must go

In England Ramabai and her daughter went to the Sister of Mercy convent at Wantage. Here she felt that her long pilgrimage to find God was over. She found the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. She went to Cheltenham College, England, and taught Sanskrit in return.

From England, Ramabai traveled to America. She found the American people very enthusiastic and helpful. She gave many lectures and wrote the book, “High Caste Hindu Woman.” She started educating the West about the conditions of women in India. American women offered to assist her to fulfill her dream to start a home for widows. They formed Ramabai Association and promised that if she would start a school for young widows they would help her for 10 years.

The Mission

Ten years seemed like a lifetime to her. She returned to India overjoyed to start her mission. When she came to Mumbai, she was welcomed by her old friends. They were happy to help Ramabai in her mission only if she would not teach them anything about the new God she had found in the West. Ramabai agreed to do so. She would herself travel around the country and bring back young girls who are widows suffering in pain and agony.

Ramabai had seen some land in Kedgaon near Pune and bought it for the girls to stay. She started a school called “Sharda Sadan” (House of knowledge), in which she taught reading, writing, history, and nature study. She started with 20 girls. That year there was a famine, so Ramabai herself set out to find children left hungry and begging. She brought 200 children for whom she provided shelter.

Eventually, Ramabai found two helpers, one Indian and the other English, who shared her burden. She systematically taught the older girls first who in turn would take charge and help the younger girls. She set up a home called the Mukti Mission (The home of Salvation) and had 2000 girls living in it.

For the next 20 years, Pandita Ramabai went on working and caring for her large family. She passed away on the 5th of April, 1922. It has been over 100 years since the humble beginnings of the Mukti Mission. Her vision continues in the lives of many women and young girls today who have found hope and new life at Mukti Mission. Still today, the mission continues to thrive locally and around the world. For further information, please visit http://www.ramabaimuktimission.com/.

Testimony of Hindu Friend from India

I came from a Hindu background. In this article, I will try to bring a conclusion on what is my primary motive to follow Jesus Christ.

The first movie that I saw in USA, in theaters, was “The Passion of Christ”. I remember seeing it in the Winter/Spring of 2004. I went to the movie not knowing what to expect because I did not know much about Jesus that time. A good friend of mine took me to the movie, and told me that the movie was about the final ten hours of the life of Jesus Christ.

There was a scene that specially caught my attention: Jesus was arrested and brought before the high priests. Many Jews gave false witnesses and condemned Jesus. They slapped him, spit on him, insulted him. Then one of the high priests came forward and asked Jesus “Tell us. Are you the messiah, the Son of the Living God?”. Jesus said “Yes, I AM. You will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven” !!!!!!!!

I did not know how to whistle. Otherwise, I would be whistling. My mind was blown away! Here was a man, who was being punished and still confessed the truth.

Next, they brought Jesus to Pilate, who was a ruler. Pilate asked Jesus “Do you know that I have the power to release you?”. Then Jesus answered “You have no power over me unless it is given to you from above” !!!

The movie “Passion of Christ” had put one of the seeds in my heart, to find the truth. Later, when I had the opportunity to know more about Jesus by reading the book “More than a Carpenter” by Josh McDowell, I liked him more. But, the more I liked him, the more I resisted him also. Soon, I understood that he was making more demands. The problem that I had with Jesus was he wanted us to put him in the first place!

Below are some scriptures about his demands:

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. 27And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” – Luke 14:25

“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” – Matthew 10:39

Many people get discouraged by the above demands. But Jesus claimed that he came to save us.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” – John 10:10

It was a long journey for me to come to Christ, from Hindu background. Sometimes the experiences were painful and disturbing, seeing demands like the above ones. Hinduism was a very old religion and came much before Christianity. It has many fascinating philosophies and scriptures. But why did we still choose Christ? Because there is no Savior in any other religion who claimed to bear the sins of whole world upon his shoulders and died for the mankind, like Jesus did. Jesus claimed that He died for us, including you and me. The greatest sacrifice that one can do to others is laying down one’s life for others and our Lord Jesus did for us. Even while hanging on his dying cross, he said “Father, forgive them, they do not know what they are doing”. Such a magnificent love he lavished on humans.

Besides his death, there are many pieces in the puzzle that influenced me to come to conclusion that he is “the way” to God, as what he claimed. Some of them include his perfect righteousness, his teachings about mercy and forgiveness, his extraordinary claims, his resurrection, his miracles that are happening even now, sources outside the Bible that talk about his miracles, early Christian church history, and authenticity of New Testament documents.

I am happy now that I accepted Christ and found the truth. There is no joy that equals working for Him and His Kingdom. If you are not from a Christian background, will you open your heart to my Lord? It is not about whether you are right or I am right, but about what is right. Will you please pray this humble prayer?

“Lord Jesus, who are you? I hear a lot about you. I want to know who you truly are. Please reveal yourself to me.”

Testimony of a Hindu Person from Nepal

Out of desperation on the hospital bed, Pradesh cried, “God, if you are there, don’t let me die. I will change my ways.” His prayers worked and he started feeling better. But not giving much thought to his prayer in the hospital, he attributed his recovery to his luck to his friend, Shaunna. His friend has a strange comment about it. “May be it wasn’t luck.” Later on, He received a letter from Shaunna to consider putting faith in Jesus Christ. His initial reaction was, “How dare she seek to convert me, a Hindu to christianity?”

He was presented a gospel by a christian chinese student. As he pondered about the words of Jesus later that night, conflicting thoughts plagued him. “How can bible be true when millions of people in Nepal have never even heard of Jesus Christ, let alone believe in Him? But what if, Bible is true? This led to sincere desire and efforts to know more about Jesus and Christianity. Various events in short time, made him think that God was really pursuing him. He started reading bible and other books, namely, “Evidence that Demands a Verdict” by Josh McDowell. He was amazed to find the answers of the questions about Jesus, His claims, historical evidences of His death and resurrection. The more he read, the more he was convicted about his own sinfulness and God’s grace through Jesus Christ.

On the day in July of 1984, he received Jesus Christ as his personal savior and Lord, with unspeakable joy and assurance of forgiveness of his sins, adoption into family of God, fellowship with God, and everlasting life and inheritance in heaven.

This wonderful testimony of a person from Nepal would deeply touch and warm your heart as you learn about God’s mysterious and marvelous work in his life.

Here is his message to his readers – “Dear reader, I have found not a religion but a real and blessed relationship with God. May you, too, consider the Person of Jesus Christ apart from whom there is no other way to get right with God.”
